Visual Studio Code vs VSCodium: Distribution, Services and Extensions

Visual Studio Code and VSCodium share much of the same upstream code, but they are different distributions. The choice affects product services, licensing, update channels and how extensions are obtained.

Understand the builds

Microsoft distributes Visual Studio Code with Microsoft-specific product configuration, branding and online services. VSCodium builds binaries from the open-source Code - OSS project with different defaults. The official VS Code FAQ explains the distinction between the repository and Microsoft's product distribution; the VSCodium project documents its own build and services.

Telemetry and online-service settings are not the only difference. Extension galleries have terms, availability and compatibility constraints. Microsoft notes that Marketplace extensions are licensed for the Visual Studio family; VSCodium commonly uses Open VSX, so an extension available in one gallery may not be available or licensed in the other.

Compare your actual extensions

List the extensions you rely on, including language tooling, remote development and debugging. Check each publisher, license, update source and required service. Do not assume a successful installation means every feature has the same support or update path.

Choose for the environment

For a managed workplace, consider policy, support and approved extension sources. For an individual developer, compare the online services and defaults you want. In either case, update the editor and extensions regularly, and review extensions with access to source code and terminals as software that can execute in your development environment.

Test a representative project before switching an entire team. Keep the editor choice consistent in project instructions where extensions or remote workflows differ.
